Some of you out there have recently been laid off, furloughed, or permanently displaced from your employer. You may be asking yourself, what do I do now? No one is currently hiring for the skills set that I possess, so what should I do? The harsh truth is that many companies will be forever changed due to Covid-19. So my suggestions to you are simiple:

  • Take ownership of your situation. Understand that this has nothing to do with you or your ability, it may be time to self reflect on what you can do to set yourself apart from others.
  • Focus on your strengths, and develop your weaknesses. The idea is to showcase the value you offer to others, while working to develop the areas that you may lack in. Doing so will provide balance in your abilities.
  • Be open to new ideas. If you are unfamiliar with blogging, videoing conversations, YouTube, podcasts, then do your research and find your voice in all this chaos. Sometime you have to be vulnerable enough to put out the content that may help others succeed.
  • Connect! Connect with everyone on LinkedIn or other social media platforms and learn as much as you can from them. Share ideas and engage as much as you can on a daily, weekly, monthly basis.
  • Know your purpose. We all have talents and abilities that make us unique even when we may share the same talents and abilities with others. As an HR professional, I share this platform with tens of thousands of highly qualified and experience HR professionals, and gladly do so.

So, What now! Get off the couch or out of bed and re-position yourself as a subject matter expert and put yourself out there for everyone to see. It is time to re-brand who you are as an individual and seek opportunities that fit who you are as a person. DON’T dwell on the past or what has happened to put you where you are today. This happened to get you out of your comfort zone and create something that is desirable for you. Everything that happens in our lives is an opportunity. When one door closes, 10 more will open. Believe in yourself and push through. Remember, YOU GOT THIS!
